The Lovely Witch Origin Story
by Renee Laprise
Like many of us I have my 'story' from childhood. Despite the love and laughs, my mind wanted to focus only on the fear and confusion. Art was my solace, a place to hide. My tumultuous 20's found me struggling in an environment of conceptual art. All my passion was trained to move through my brain and I lost touch with my creative self. To my dismay, that childhood safety net was gone and I found myself creatively paralysed. Without art I fell into a cycle of self destructive behaviour and depression. It wasn't until my 30's and the birth of my beautiful daughter, that I finally asked for help. So after years with a life coach, various energy healers and spiritual guides, there were finally spits and spurts of heartfelt expression. As I healed I could sense my creativity resurfacing and the urge to make art was now undeniable.
One day after a long meditation I decided to paint. I was in such a state of bliss that part of my soul made its way onto the canvas for the first time ever. It wasn't about expressing pain or hiding from fear or being clever. This little girl, in a black feather tutu sitting in a pink meadow surrounded by flowers, was a pure expression of my very soul. This lovely little witch. as I called her, made her way into many of my doodles and drawings. I was possessed by her image, so to celebrate my reclaimed passion and my pending 40th birthday I decided to become the Lovely Witch and recreate the journey of my healing process in photos. It was a big stretch for me. I was never comfortable having other people take photos of me, partly because I didn't want to look fat but mostly because I had terrible stage fright and would freeze at the thought of even speaking in front of people let alone expressing emotion on film. But with the help of my good friend and partner in crime, Patti Larsen, and photographer extraordinaire, Anna Karpinski, I was able to accomplish my goal. I loved the support and collaboration between the three of us. It really helped me relax into what I was looking to express. The photos, taken on a beach in Prince Edward Island, Canada, were phenomenal and the Lovely Witch stayed in my heart for months after.
I realized as I showed the pictures around that so many women could identify with my journey and the feeling of disconnect from their creativity. As the next summer approached I met up with a witchy woman named Kele Redmond. A spark of creative energy sizzled between the two of us and I began to yearn for the Lovely Witch to make another appearance. I thought it would be so great if we had a club of Lovely Witches so we could explore new creative avenues together all the time. Patti and I quickly decided that this was a great idea and so we formed the Lovely Witches Club with the intention that we would launch that Hallowe'en with a Witches Ball. Kele came onboard to work with us on the Ball and at the same time we three developed the first LWC 'wisdom' deck together filled with affirmations that would prove to resonate with many women. The Witches Ball was a wonderful evening of spectacle filled from beginning to end with performances based on the elements including fire dancing, drumming, african dancing, juggling, and ballroom dancing. Nothing like it had ever been seen in PEI and it met with fantastic reviews.
From there the Lovely Witches Club took off like a rocket and Patti and I haven't looked back since. We continuously encourage and facilitate the creative development of our membership by hosting creative LWC socials and workshops in skills development like novel writing, storytelling, and creative healing practices just to mention a few.
The Lovely Witches Club also hosts a thriving global online community at www.lovelywitchesclub.ning.com.
Here our members share their creative expression by uploading art and writing, starting discussions and posting blogs. The energy in the Lovely Witches Club online community is exciting and very inspiring. It's a collective energy that is built up from the membership. They are the ones that drive it and feed it. It's a pleasure to know that we are able to offer something so simple yet so vitally important to our community and to the world at large. We intend for the Lovely Witches Club to develop a solid global presence online and in real world groups so that other communities can experience the same kind of energy explosion that we have felt here on Prince Edward Island.
I am truly blessed.
